This is my first post here and I am hoping someone can answer it here. Is it possible to see my daughter's skating performance (short program) that was streamed online yesterday (BMO 2011 BC/Yukon Sectionals)...? If so, how does one navigate this site to see it? On the SkateTV page, click on the 'events' button that is on the lower left, right above the 'skaters' button. There you will find links to all events recorded by SkateBuzz. There are many thumbnails for the BC1Yukon Sectionals.

Is there somewhere on the internet where you can watch the Olympic exhibition/gala? ctvolympics.ca has all the competition events but doesn't seem to have the gala.

Moire and Virtue are the class of this event. As a pair they have significant quality to the blade and their long time together has resulted in the most refined unison of all the top teams. Scott is the most superior male skater which should be reflected in the marks -- he 'performs' as well as his partner -- exudes the same level of emotion and executes the difficult footwork as well. I don't think that's the case with the American or Russian teams. They are strong but Scott excells. I sincerely hope that they deliver what they are capable of in the original dance and free dance and that they are duley rewarded. The judges were generous in their marking of the Russian team in their compulsary dance but the quality of V&M's skating in the original dance should move them into first. Their footwork and lifts are superior and they always skate closer together which is more challenging. Go Canada!! edited by synchroskate on 2/20/2010

I cannot believe that Plushenko thinks he deserves to win the gold. AND I cannot believe that Stojko has joined the "quad rules" ranks. (Although Elvis was a one dimensional skater himself so not really a surprise there!) Plushenko clearly thought that if he delivered the quad/triple combination and nothing else he would win. His program had no other content -- all front end jumps (many of which were shakey) and the slooooooooowest footwork of the top calibre of men. What was all the blowing kisses crap? What was he thinking? Clearly the Russion federation forgot that the new rules demanded quality footwork, spins AND gave bonus marks for triple jumps after the half way point. As a former skater/coach I am THRILLED that the rules give due reward for difficult footwork and spins. Figure skating is NOT about delivering one jump.... the end. That is so done.

I am very confused as how we only have 2 men going to the olympics and worlds I thought that as long as the top two skater/teams finished with a combined ranking of 12 you sent 3 teams. Please clarify for me.

Thank you for your opinion in response to mine. I would certainly join you in expressing best wishes to all the skaters who will represent Canada on the Olympic team.
Also I should add that I have nothing but admiration for all of our skaters who are not only top athletes but also performers and entertainers. We can be so very proud of them. Not just for their achievements but also their graciousness in victory and defeat.

2010 Canadian Nationals - Sr Dance - Judging

Hello Ralph - I guess you have been a fan for a long time if you remember so emotionally the scandal from Salt Lake - but the new judging system fixed that... why don't you take the time to go onto the Skate Canada website and look at the details... Crone and Poirier were given the correct deduction on the twizzle sequence - just as Weaver and Poje were given the correct deduction for the error they made in the circular sequence.... similarly, Crone and Poirier were rewarded for their expression, and Weaver and Poje were not as they were "tight" and comparing their National performance to their performance at Skate Canada, - they were clearly nervous.
Also - although audience voting only counts in Battle of the Blades.... Crone and Poirier - according the the audience reaction, should have gotten a much higher mark on their OD... did you miss that - or perhaps you were sitting in WOS country.....
Given the lengthy deliberation following the performance - it would seem to me that time was taken to review video etc. to come to the "correct" outcome. It is insulting to Skate Canada and in fact all of the athletes - whether they are medallists, or Olympians, to suggest that the outcome is predetermined. However, if that is how you truly feel, how can you explain that Skate Canada wanted Crone & Poirier to come out ahead of Weaver and Poje if not for the fact that Skate Canada believes that ultimately Crone & Poirier are in fact better skaters.
Since you feel confident to post that "Vanessa and Paul ... would know in their hearts that they were unfairly favored by the judges", I feel equally confident to post that Kaitlyn and Andrew know in their hearts, that although they have improved greatly this season, they were not quite up to the task.
Good luck to Paul and Vanessa and Tessa and Scott and the rest of the Canadian Olympic team.

The 2nd and 3rd place results for the Sr Dance, most particularly the Free Dance, were devastatingly disappointing. Don't imagine it will have any effect but I have sent this letter (below) to Skate Canada:
Dear Madam/Sir,
Since I am not certain whether this is the correct address to which to send my comments, I would like to ask you to redirect this message as appropriate.
As you are no doubt aware, the results of the Senior Dance at the 2010 Canadian Figure Skating Championships surprised more than a few. Anyone who saw the performances of Kaitlyn Weaver / Andrew Poje and Vanessa Crone / Paul Poirier should have been surprised by the scores for the Free Dance awarded by the judges. It was very clear and obvious that Kaitlyn Weaver / Andrew Poje skated better than Vanessa Crone / Paul Poirier. Rewarding Vanessa Crone / Paul Poirier with a second place finish and a score which was significantly better than their personal best for the season stunned the audience, especially considering that Vanessa Crone / Paul Poirier opened the door for Kaitlyn and Andrew when Vanessa fell during a required element (a twizzle). The audience is not expert as the judges are but, at the same time, it is not stupid either. The reaction in response to the judging should give Skate Canada something to think about.
This kind of judging is simply appalling and represents nothing less than a disaster.
The judges largely ruined Tessa and Scott's performance for the audience because it was almost impossible to focus on them following the unfairness just witnessed. The score certainly would have felt like a kick in the teeth to Kaitlyn and Andrew. And it just as certainly would affect Vanessa and Paul who would know in their hearts that they were unfairly favored by the judges.
Furthermore, this kind of judging reflects very badly on Skate Canada and it tarnishes the sport of figure skating. It certainly sends the wrong message to young skaters that performance may not be acknowledged.
It is embarrassing to witness such a charade. Have the judges and Skate Canada not learned anything from the judging scandals of the past, particularly well exemplified by the case of Jamie Sale and David Pelletier?
The only reason for the judges' score, that comes to mind, is a pre-determined decision on who will represent Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in ice dance which had to be justified by the results, regardless of the skating. The latter certainly seems probable in light of the lengthy deliberation following Vanessa and Paul's performance.
As a skater myself and as a supporter of the sport of figure skating, I would like to register my complaint and extreme unhappiness with the judges for this event and hope that Skate Canada will address this matter in an appropriate manner.
Sincerely,
Ralph Daehn

Way cool – have you seen this? Skate Canada has just launched a “You be the Judge” application on SkateBUZZ... you can judge along with the competition LIVE. Even better – we get to see the detailed breakdown of the technical scores as the program happens!
Can only use it during a live event … but it’s pretty cool. Check it out.... http://skatebuzz.com/ViewNewsArticle.aspx?id=5c30e47c-9c85-4abc-9a23-762e8955f104

Practice reports say she is looking good. I hope she skates very well tomorrow and Saturday - but not too well- because I want her to peak at the Olympics.
Also, I hope this is allowed. If it isn't, forgive me. One of my best friends wrote a beautiful children's book on Joannie. Here's the link. http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/joannie-rochette-canadian-ice-princess/6235645

While I agree that the front runners in men's and ladies singles and dance are in a league of their own,the best thing that could happen for our future would be for able skaters to be permitted to take a shot at the second ranking favourites. Too often we see a favourite wipe the ice only to be rewarded while a superior skate is undermarked. For the sake of the future let ability rise based on skating rather than politics or which province the skater represents.

Chan coaching change

I've been pondering what to make of the news that Patrick Chan's coach, Don Laws, is no longer coaching Patrick just weeks before the Nationals/Olympics. My sense is that the article from IceNetwork is overplaying the situation (check out the misconstrued and sensationalist article title) the "official line" from CBC and SkateBuzz is underplaying it. I don't suppose idle speculation of what is "really" going on would be helpful, but I wanted to at least draw attention to the ways its being covered by various media.
Ice Network: http://web.icenetwork.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100108&content_id=7892404&vkey=ice_news CBC: http://www.cbc.ca/olympics/story/2010/01/08/spo-chan-new-coach.html
Whatever the truth, best wishes to Patrick for a healthy, inspired performance!

Perdictions - Ice dance gold is really a no brainer...Tessa and Scott all the way. I think that Kaitlyn and Andrew have worked really hard this year and they could claim the silver, and the second olympic spot...but they will have to skate their BEST! Vanessa and Paul should do well too.
Ladies gold - Joannie...no doubt about it...she is in a league of her own. As for the second olympic spot...I would love to see Cynthia take it...but Ameile has been skating well, and so has Diane Schmidt...who knows...ladies are always so unpredictable.
Pairs - ? Hopefully somebody shows up! Bryce and Jess have the programs that could claim it for sure...but they have to skate as a team....like I said ??? However I am sure that they will be on the Olympic team. The second spot is certainly up for grabs!
Mens - Patrick will take the title...again, like Joannie, a league of his own. The second Olympic spot will probably be earned by Jermey...HOWEVER...there are a few diamonds in the rough out there that when they are on....could claim it...namely Vaughn Chipeur....Kevin the Quad King....game on.
This is an Olympic year...although gold, silver and bronze at Nationals is always important...this year...peforming well and being in the top two will likely qualify the skater for an Olympic team spot (Skate Canada ALWAYS has a final say...).
London is going to be very enlightening.
