Welcome back to the final installment in our series of profiles of Skate Canada officials assigned to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
Although assigned as a substitute in the ice dance event, Toronto’s Ann Shaw is no stranger to officiating at the elite level. Ann has been judging at the section level for forty years, the Canadian level for thirty five years, the international level for thirty three years, has judged at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships two times, refereed four times, been assigned as assistant referee twice, and acted as technical controller once. Ann has also judged at two Olympics and been assigned as assistant referee once. In 2008, after refereeing the ice dance event, Ann was presented with the ISU Gold Award of Merit. In 2005, along with four other ISU officials she received a special silver tray from ISU President Ottavio Cinquanta, in recognition of her work with the ISU Judging System and for being a leader in sport.
Ann’s involvement in the sport is legendary. She has authored or co-authored many of the manuals and handbooks essential to the education of officials both here in Canada and internationally for the ISU. Suffice to say that there are no ice dance officials in both Skate Canada and worldwide that have not been touched in some way by Ann’s dedication to our sport.
All six Canadian officials share many of the same traits; dedication to a sport that is truly Canadian, a deep sense of volunteerism, the strength of family and the love of a hometown club. We wish each of them a wonderful and magical time in Vancouver.
