Skate Canada is proud to be represented at the upcoming 2010 Olympic Winter Games by six officials.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll profile each of these exceptional volunteers.
From Edmonton, Alberta, Dr. Jodi Abbott, assigned to judge the ice dance event, is the current Vice President of the Skate Canada Board of Directors. She started judging when she was 16-years-old while growing up in the small community of Edson, Alberta. Her family was the skating club, where her mother served as club president and four other siblings shared the ice with her. Speaking of her mother Jodi says, “She really was the back bone of the club and ensured that figure skaters had ice.”
Jodi has been judging internationally for 11 years and has represented Skate Canada at three ISU World Figure Skating Championships. She considers herself fortunate to count as her mentors current Skate Canada President Benoît Lavoie and fellow ISU official Ann Shaw.
Jodi competed to the divisional level while training under Michael Jiranek in Calgary, Alberta, and in Parksville, British Columbia under Jean Bowling and Michael Abbott, who has been her husband for the past 27 years.
In talking about this assignment Jodi says, “I love skating and feel honored to represent Canada as an official at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver”.
Jodi is currently the chair of the Skate Canada International Committee and sits on both the Officials Coordinating Committee and the Technical Officials Committee.
Jodi is the Vice President, Quality Performance Improvement for Alberta Health Services. She also is on the Board of Governors of Norquest Community College in Edmonton, Alberta.
