Skating 101's first profile of Skate Canada’s officials assigned to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver features Andrea Derby.
Andrea Derby, assigned to judge the pair discipline in Vancouver, is also from a family of skaters in Whitby, Ontario, close to Toronto; mother Jane Derby is an active Canadian level judge herself. Andrea commented on her mother’s influence in getting her involved as a judge, “It was a way to remain involved in the sport and also a way to give back to skating as a volunteer.”
After starting skating at the tender age of four, Andrea moved into pair skating by eight, a discipline she admits to preferring having skated more than singles. Andrea competed at five national championships in pair. Along the way, she passed her Gold Free Skate, her Gold Pair, and Gold Dance Tests. Andrea admits to not quite making the Gold figure despite ‘countless’ attempts at the seventh test.
Andrea judged her first BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships in 1997. After becoming an active international judge in 2001, she represented Canada for the first time at an ISU World Figure Skating Championships in March, 2009 in Los Angeles, USA.
