Young talent heads to the Netherlands for the 2010 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada is sending a strong team of skaters to the 2010 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in the The Hague, Netherlands. The event will run from March 8-14, 2010 at the De Uithof ice rink. Canada will be represented in all four categories with two entries in men’s, one in ladies and three in both pair and ice dance for a total of nine entries and 15 skaters.

In the men’s category Ronald Lam, 19, Coquitlam, B.C., will skate for Canada. Lam had two ISU Junior Grand Prix assignments this year, his best was in Torun, Poland were he placed fifth. He is coached by Bruno Delmaestro and Kelly Champagne at Coquitlam SC.

Andrei Rogozine, 17, Richmond Hill, Ont., is the second entry for Canada in the men’s discipline. During the 2009 ISU Junior Grand Prix series he had two placements; his top placement wassixth in Dresden, Germany. Rogozine is coached by Inga Zusev at the Richmond Hill Training Centre.

Kate Charbonneau, 16, Winnipeg, Man., is the only Canadian in the ladies category. Earlier this season she picked up a silver medal at her second ISU Grand Prix event in Zagreb, Croatia. Charbonneau is coached by Robert Tebby at the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie, Ont., and by Lori Charbonneau at the Bloomington FSC.

Kaleigh Hole, 16, Virden, Man., and Adam Johnson, 21, Chatham, Ont., are one of three Canadian pair teams at the event. They are coming off a strong season having captured medals at both their ISU Junior Grand Prix events, gold in Lake Placid, USA and a bronze in Minsk, Belarus. They qualified for the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final where they placed fifth. They are coached by Scott Rachuk and Alison Purkiss at Strathroy.

Brittany Jones, 14, Toronto, Ont., and Kurtis Gaskell, 19, Guelph, Ont., will also represent in the pair category. Earlier this season they picked up their first international medal, a bronze at the ISU Grand Prix in Torun, Poland. Jones and Gaskell train at the Rim Park Arena in Waterloo, Ont., and are coached by Kristy and Kris Wirtz.

Margaret Purdy, 15, Strathroy, Ont., and Michael Marinaro, 18, Sarnia, Ont., claimed the 2010 Canadian Junior Pair title in London, Ontario in January. This will be their third international event after competing at two ISU Grand Prix events earlier this year. The duo is coached by Scott Rachuk and Alison Purkiss at the Competitive Skating Centre of Strathroy.

Ice dancers Alexandra Paul, 18 and Mitchell Islam 20, both of Barrie, Ont., are one of three ice dance teams representing Canada. The team was assigned to two ISU Grand Prix competitions this year; their best placing was fourth in Torun, Poland. The duo is coached by David Islam and Pavol Porac at the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie.

Also in ice dance is the team of Olivia Martins, 18, Toronto, Ont., and Alvin Chau, 20, Richmond Hill, Ont. They also had two assignments on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit and placed sixth in Budapest, Hungary and Dresden, Germany. They are coached by Carol Lane and Juris Razgulajevs out of the Scarboro FSC.

Rounding out the team are Abby Carswell, 16, Toronto, Ont., and Andrew Doleman, 20, Dundas, Ont. They placed eighth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix event in Lake Placid, USA earlier this season. Carol Lane and Juris Razgulajevs coach the team at the Scarboro FSC.

Petra Burka of Toronto, Ont., and Louis Stong of Etobicoke, Ont., are the team leaders at the event. The medical staff at the event will be Dr. Laura Purcell of London, Ontario and physiotherapist Sheila Bauman of Arthur, Ontario. The Canadian officials at the event are Elizabeth Clark of Ottawa, Ont., Karen Howard of Regina, Sask., and Susan Heffernan of Roberts Creek, BC.
